Let’s be honest – once you start sourdough, it kind of takes over your kitchen. This quick sewing project is an easy way to dress up your sourdough starter jar while still letting it breathe. It’s simple, functional, and perfect for anyone looking for a low-pressure DIY win.

Materials Needed:
- Cotton fabric (scraps work great — about ¼ yard is plenty)
- Coordinating thread
- Elastic (¼” wide recommended) I used 1/8′
- Scissors or rotary cutter
- Sewing machine
- Safety pin (for threading elastic)
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Sourdough starter jar (to size your cover)
Optional (but helpful)
Pins or clips
Iron or fabric steamer
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Cut Your Fabric
- Place your jar upside down on the fabric
- Cut a circle 2–3 inches larger than the bowl all the way around
(This extra space is for the elastic casing)

2. Create the Elastic Channel
- Fold the raw edge over ½ inch, then fold again another ½ inch
- Press if you want (optional but helpful)
- Sew around the circle, leaving a 2-inch opening

3. Add the Elastic
- Cut elastic to about ¾ the circumference of your bowl
- Thread elastic through the casing using a safety pin
- Overlap elastic ends and sew together
- Close the opening with a straight stitch

4. Test & Adjust
- Stretch it over your bowl
- Adjust elastic if needed
- Congrats!
