A scrunchie is pretty timeless. I mean, how many times have you asked your girlfriend, “Do you have a scrunchie that I can borrow”? Did you know that scrunchies are easy to make? That’s right, scrunchies are easy to sew, even for a beginner! So, let’s throw it back to the 80’s and 90’s and get our scrunchie making skills working!
What Fabric Do I Use For My Scrunchie?
Our scrunchie can be made with just about any fabric, from cotton to velvet, and a needle and thread. If you’re a beginner, we recommend starting with cotton, which is an easier material to work with.
What You’ll Need To Make Your Scrunchie
- Fabric
- Tape Measure
- Fabric Scissors
- Pins
- Needle / thread
- Safety Pin
- Elastic (1/4″)
- Your sewing machine
Instructions
Step 1- Cut your fabric
Cut your fabric into a 3 1/2 x 22- inch strip
Step 2- Fold your fabric
Fold your fabric lengthwise with the pretty sides (right sides) are together. Pin it along the center.
Step 3- Sew the long edge
Sew a straight line across the long edge. Remove the pins once you are done.
Step 4- Turn right sides out
Pull the strip right side out by attaching a safety pin on one end and feeding it through the inside of the tube. Pull it through the opposite end. Now all the pretty print is on the outside!
Step 5- Cut the elastic
Cut your elastic to 9 inches in length. Attach a safety pin to one side.
Step 6- Thread the elastic
Thread the elastic through the tube. This is tricky because you need to make sure the end of it doesn’t go inside. I either pin the end to the bottom or hold it in my hand.
Step 7- Tie the knot
Remove the safety pin and tie the two ends together to form a knot.
Step 8- Fold in the edges
Fold in the edges to create an even seam. I usually tuck one end to make it pretty and then put the other side inside of it. Pin it to hold in place and sew a straight line across to join the two sides. Some people like to do this by hand but I don’t have time for that!
Step 9- Rock your scrunchie!
Wear it or share it – they make great “sursees”!
