At my father-in-law’s funeral, my husband stood up and gave one of the most beautiful eulogies I’ve ever heard. It wasn’t long or flashy. It was honest. Full of gratitude. Full of reflection. And full of love.
But one small moment in his words has stayed with me more than anything else.
He shared that it wasn’t until fairly recently that his dad had ever said the words, “I love you,” to him.
Not because the love wasn’t there.
Not because his dad didn’t care.
But because for many in an older generation and honestly, even in ours, those words can feel vulnerable. Risky. Awkward. Exposed.
What my husband shared next was even more meaningful.
He was the one who said it first.
He felt led to say it, out loud, intentionally, and when he did, it opened something between them. A door. A new way of communicating. A deeper tenderness that hadn’t existed before in words, even though it had always existed in action.
And it made me think about how often we hold back the very words that could mean the most.
Sometimes we’re afraid of getting hurt.
What if they don’t say it back?
What if it feels uncomfortable?
What if we look silly, emotional, or weak?
So we assume people already know.
But do they?
Three simple words can carry so much weight.
They can heal old spaces.
They can soften hard seasons.
They can become the sentence someone remembers for the rest of their life.

The Bible reminds us that love isn’t meant to stay hidden.
“Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” — 1 John 3:18
But I’d gently add this: sometimes the words matter too.
Because words have power.
Words build bridges.
Words become memories.
And then there’s Jesus.
We don’t hear Him physically say, “I love you,” the way we hear it from another person.
But His love is written everywhere.
In the cross.
In forgiveness.
In grace that keeps showing up when we don’t deserve it.
In mercy that meets us right where we are.
“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.” — 1 John 4:9
Jesus may not whisper it in our ear, but His love is undeniable.
It’s in every sacrifice.
Every second chance.
Every quiet nudge toward hope.
And maybe that’s our reminder.
If Jesus shows love so freely…
If God didn’t hold back the greatest expression of love…
Why do we?
Why do we wait?
Why do we save “I love you” for milestones… or endings… or funerals?
What if we said it more — to our parents, our kids, our spouses, our friends?
What if we didn’t assume they knew?
Because someday, when memories are being shared and stories are being told, those words might be the ones that matter most.
Three simple words.
Quiet. Brave.
And powerful enough to change everything.
So today, maybe don’t hold them back.
Say it.
Text it.
Speak it.
Live it.
“I love you.”
You never know how much someone might need to hear it.
