Some of the best moments in life don’t happen in living rooms or perfectly styled spaces.
They happen in the kitchen.
Leaning against the counter.
Laughing while something’s in the oven.
Tasting, talking, telling stories, and somehow staying way longer than planned.
I’ve come to believe that the kitchen isn’t just where we make meals — it’s where we make memories.
And entertaining?
It doesn’t have to be complicated, expensive, or impressive.
It just has to be intentional.
Hospitality Is Really About Heart
Somewhere along the way, we started thinking that having people over requires:
- Fancy recipes
- Perfect timing
- A magazine-worthy table
But I don’t think hospitality was ever meant to be about performance.
I think it’s simply about opening your door and saying,
“Come in. Sit down. You belong here.”
Jesus gathered people around tables again and again, not because the meals were elaborate, but because connection happens best when we slow down together.
Food is just the excuse.
The real gift is the time.

My Favorite Way to Entertain (Easy, Cozy, and Full of Joy)
Here’s the truth:
The best gatherings I’ve hosted weren’t the fancy ones.
They were the simple ones.
The ones where:
- The menu was easy
- The conversation was real
- And nobody felt rushed
Here’s a favorite low-stress menu that works every time — perfect for friends, neighbors, Bible study, or an impromptu “come over for dinner.”
🍽️ The “Joy on the Table” Easy Menu
Something Warm & Filling:
- Baked ziti or baked spaghetti
- Rotisserie chicken with gravy
- Chili or tortilla soup
- Taco bar (always a crowd favorite)
A Couple of Simple Sides:
- Big green salad
- Fresh fruit
- Chips & guacamole or salsa
- Warm bread or rolls
A Sweet Ending:
- Brownies or blondies
- Cookies on a pretty plate
- Ice cream with toppings
- A simple cake from the bakery
Drinks That Make People Stay Longer:
- Lemonade or sweet tea
- Sparkling water with fruit
- Coffee (always coffee)
That’s it.
Nothing fancy.
Nothing stressful.
Just good food and room for joy.
The Little Things That Make It Special
You don’t need a styled tablescape.
Try instead:
- A candle in the middle of the table
- Cloth napkins or a handwritten note
- Soft music in the background
- Letting people serve themselves and relax
It’s not about how it looks.
It’s about how it feels.
Final Thought
Some of my favorite memories were made:
- Around mismatched plates
- With laughter spilling over
- And dishes stacked high at the end of the night
Because when people feel welcomed, seen, and loved…
everything else fades into the background.
That’s what I want “In the Kitchen with Sursees” to always be about.
Joy.
Connection.
And the simple beauty of gathering.
Because the kitchen isn’t where perfection lives.
It’s where love does.
