Make a DIY Flower Gift Topper

DIY Flower Gift Toppers: Because the Outside Should Be a Sursee To Make the Gift as Pretty as What’s Inside

Pretty wrapped gift

I have a theory about gifts: the wrapping is part of the gift.

Now, does that mean I am above throwing something into a gift bag five minutes before leaving the house and desperately searching the junk drawer for tissue paper? Absolutely not. We all have our moments.

But when I have a little extra time, I love making a gift feel special before the person ever opens it. There is something about a pretty package that says, I thought about you.

And that is very Sursees.

For this one, I wanted something prettier than a regular bow but still ridiculously easy to make. Enter a faux flower, a tiny wooden clothespin, a little hot glue, and about five minutes.

The result is this sweet little reusable flower gift topper that clips right onto the ribbon.

The best part? No floral-arranging degree required.

What You’ll Need

You only need a few supplies:

  • Faux flowers
  • Mini wooden clothespins
  • Hot glue gun and glue
  • Scissors or wire cutters if your flowers have stems
  • Ribbon
  • A beautifully wrapped gift

Sursee Tip: Keep an eye out for faux flowers when craft stores change seasons. You can grab them on clearance and make a whole stash of these for birthdays, hostess gifts, Mother’s Day, showers, or those random I saw this and thought of you gifts.

Step 1: Remove the Flower From the Stem

Start by removing the bloom from the faux flower stem.

Depending on the flower, you may be able to simply pull it off. Others might need to be snipped with wire cutters.

You want the back of the flower to be relatively flat so your clothespin has a good surface to attach to.

Trim the stem off of the flower

Remove the faux flower from its stem and flatten the back as much as possible.

Step 2: Add the Mini Clothespin

This is where our little flower becomes useful.

Turn the flower over and place a small amount of hot glue on the back. Attach your mini clothespin, making sure you position it so the clothespin can still open easily.

Hold it in place for a few seconds while the glue sets.

And please remember that hot glue is called hot glue for a reason. I have apparently needed to relearn this lesson approximately 437 times in my crafting career.

A mini clothespin turns an inexpensive faux flower into a reusable gift topper.

Step 3: Wrap Your Gift

Now wrap your gift normally and add ribbon.

You don’t need to make an elaborate bow because the flower is going to do all the work for us.

I used a simple white satin ribbon with floral wrapping paper, which keeps everything soft and pretty without competing with the flower.

Step 4: Clip on Your Flower

Here comes the satisfying part.

Simply clip your finished flower onto the ribbon.

That’s it.

No complicated bow tying. No florist wire. No wrestling with curling ribbon until it looks like something from a 1997 birthday party.

Just clip and done.

And Look How Pretty It Is

What started as a little faux flower and a tiny clothespin suddenly makes the entire package feel special. Well, I got carried away and made a few – because you gotta be ready to gift!

Flower Clips

And because the flower isn’t permanently attached to the gift, the recipient can actually keep it. Clip it onto another gift, a basket, a napkin, a little bag, or tuck it away to use again.

Which means technically…

the gift topper is a tiny sursee of its own.

And you know I love that.

Make a Few While You’re At It

This is one of those crafts where making one almost doesn’t make sense. If the glue gun is already hot and the craft supplies have already taken over the dining room table, you might as well make ten.

Try pink flowers for birthdays and showers, white flowers for weddings, sunflowers for fall, greenery for Christmas, or whatever inexpensive faux blooms happen to jump into your cart at the craft store. Take a look at our under $10 gift ideas too!

Store the finished clips in a little box with your ribbon and gift wrap.

Then the next time you need a gift, you can wrap it, tie on some ribbon, clip on a flower and suddenly look like the sort of person who has her entire life together.

We don’t have to tell anyone it took five minutes.
