Boo Bags: An Easy and Inexpensive Way to Share a Little Halloween Joy

Door with a We've Been Bood poster.

I have a confession: I’m not really into all the creepy stuff that comes with Halloween. The scary masks, fake blood, and things jumping out at me? No, thank you.

But the treats? I am completely on board with the treats.

I also love any excuse to leave a little surprise for someone, which is why boo bags are one of my favorite Halloween traditions. They’re simple, fun, and an inexpensive way to brighten someone’s day. And really, isn’t that what a sursee is all about? A little something special that brings great joy.

What Is a Boo Bag?

A boo bag is a small bag, basket, or container filled with Halloween treats. You secretly leave it on a neighbor’s porch, take it to a friend, surprise a teacher, or give it to someone who could use a little extra joy.

The recipient gets to enjoy the goodies and then “boo” someone else. Before long, little bags of happiness are making their way through the neighborhood.

Think of it as ding-dong-ditch—but sweeter and with considerably better manners.

Boo Bags Don’t Have to Be Expensive

You do not need an overflowing basket filled with elaborate gifts. A thoughtful boo bag can cost less than $10—or even less if you use supplies and ribbon you already have.

Start with something simple:

  • A paper lunch sack
  • A small gift bag
  • A plastic pumpkin bucket
  • A reusable cup
  • A clear cellophane bag
  • A basket from the dollar store
  • A decorated takeout container

Add a cute ribbon and a “You’ve Been Booed” tag, and even the simplest collection of treats suddenly feels special.

What to Put in a Boo Bag

The best boo bags are filled with small things the recipient will actually enjoy. Here are a few easy ideas.

  • Halloween cookies
  • Microwave popcorn
  • Hot chocolate packets

Easy Boo Bag Themes

If you want your bag to feel a little more pulled together, choose a simple theme.

Movie Night Boo Bag

Add popcorn, candy, a favorite drink, and a note that says, “Here’s a little something for a frightfully fun movie night!”

Coffee-Lover Boo Bag

Include a coffee gift card, a fall-flavored coffee packet, a small treat, and a cute disposable cup.

Cozy Night Boo Bag

Fill it with fuzzy socks, hot chocolate, popcorn, and a small candle.

Baking Boo Bag

Add cookie mix, Halloween sprinkles, a wooden spoon, and festive napkins. I found some cute little pie molds here!

Teacher Boo Bag

Include a favorite drink, candy, colorful pens, hand lotion, and a note telling them how appreciated they are.

No-Candy Boo Bag

Use stickers, glow sticks, bubbles, pencils, small toys, or craft supplies for a fun alternative to sweets.

How to Boo Your Neighbors or Friends

Once your bag is ready, attach a “You’ve Been Booed” tag and include a simple instruction card.

Then:

  1. Choose a neighbor, friend, teacher, coworker, or family member.
  2. Leave the boo bag where they will find it.
  3. Ring the doorbell and make your getaway or hand it to them if sneaking around isn’t your thing.
  4. Encourage them to create a little boo bag for someone else.

You can also skip the instructions completely and simply give the bag as a Halloween sursee. There are no official boo-bag police. The goal is just to make someone smile.

A Little Treat Can Bring a Lot of Joy

Boo bags don’t have to be perfect, expensive, or Pinterest-worthy. A bag of popcorn, a favorite candy bar, and a handwritten note can be enough to tell someone, “I thought about you.”

That’s the beauty of a sursee. It isn’t about how much you spend. It’s about the joy tucked inside.

So while I may happily pass on the creepy decorations and scary surprises, I will always say yes to sharing treats, loving our neighbors, and finding simple ways to make someone’s day a little sweeter.

Happy booing—and happy Halloween!

Little things that bring great joy.
